Tell us a bit about yourself!
I am a mom of two with another one on the way and have been married for 10 years. I just graduated nursing school and am now taking a Perioperative Certification course so that I can do surgical missions. I am a Malaria Griot and a Congressional District Leader for ONE and get my kids involved with ONE whenever possible! When I was at Becker College, I decided since I couldn’t do nursing school, work, be a mom and do my normal ONE volunteering, I decided to bring ONE with me and start a ONE chapter. It has really thrived there and we even had the President of the college heavily involved. I really believe I passed nursing school because I was involved with ONE.

When did you first hear about ONE, and what made you decide to become a ONE member?
I first heard about ONE five years ago when I was working at a local hospital.  Being in health care, I have always been passionate about helping people. ONE allows me to be the voice for those that don’t have one.

What is your most memorable ONE moment?
There have been many!  But, I would have to say going up onstage at a U2 concert in front of 95,000 people was pretty surreal…

What’s the most challenging thing about being an activist for ONE?
The first time someone asked me why they should care about people overseas and that we should care for our own first.  I have learned good responses that help get people over to the ONE side.

What do you find is the most effective strategy in helping recruit ONE members? How do you tell the ONE story?
Showing them the facts and how much we truly make a difference for people that have fewer opportunities.  I find bringing in perspective is important. I like ONE’s story through its history – when the organization was founded and why. I also explain why I decided to add my voice. People like to hear how it relates to them. If they can relate, they are more apt to take it personally and take action.

What are you most excited about in the year to come?
So many things!  Having my third mini-activist, working with my new RFD to spread the ONE love and continuing my journey of being a nurse and advocate for the world’s poorest.

Who are the people that inspire you most?
My friend Natasja Duffin.  She has always inspired me to do more in my life and be the best that I can be. And, of course, my family. They have always been there for me and I am forever grateful to all of their love and support.

Big thank you to Becky for all the amazing work that she does for ONE. Want to nominate someone for the next Member of the Month? Email Malaka at mgharib@one.org with the subject line, “Member of the Month.”
